My PC says that I need to run start up repair…keeps locking up… Any option besides a complete restore?

Outlook PST Repair

I have a Dell :( It’s an Optiplex 745 with Vista. For the last several weeks it ‘stops responding’ and I can only power it off for ten seconds and restart it. Yesterday it said to run the windows start up repair. I left this on all day and I guess it wasn’t responding. I tried to go into repair and restore back to a date two weeks ago when it was somewhat fine. Same thing, it said ‘initializing’ for many hours and I had to power off.

I think my problem started in Outlook. When messages are transmitting, this is often when it stops responding and locks up. I have to run scan.pst often because it says there are corrupted files. (a whole other issue I guess)

Is there anything I can do besides a complete restore?? Why do computers stop responding?

Thanks!
I let it run for at least twelve hours and it just said initializing the entire time. I wasn’t sure if I should let it run all night. Can it take more than a day to run?
Thanks but nothing seems to work. I can not even boot up at all. If I press the F3 key like mad and try to boot with a disk, it says – Failed. If I press the F1 like mad and then F8, it only gives me the option to repair.

Sounds like I will need a complete restore but tryi to really avoid. I own a business and all of my info is on here. I backed up about a month ago but not since then.

Chosen Answer:

I would suggest trying the system restore again, it can take a long time because it has to load registry entries and programs and all, just be patient and wait it out.

hi sounds a bit funny to me. I would first try a virus boot scan, put in you anti virus disk. and boot up with it in the drive. Next i would log in, in safe mode and see how it responds. You do this by booting up and pressing F3 like mad as it boots it will give you a list and select SAFE MODE. if you can get in here and it does not lock up then you windows file are OK and something else is causing the problem. what i would do next is got to control panel and programs and remove my anti virus and any new up dates that have come in on the PC. if that fails my best guess is that you have damaged sectors on your hard drive so if you call to you local PC guy.
If it does work dont forget to put back on a antivirus, i would recomened one from shannonside computers they have avg avast and many other -
